Honouring the world's water towers and the ecosystems that sustain us.
World Mountain Day is celebrated every year on 11 December. Established by the United Nations after the International Year of Mountains in 2002, this day raises awareness about the importance of mountains and the challenges they face. Mountains cover about 27% of Earth's land surface and provide freshwater to more than half of the world's population. Students reflect on water cycles, biodiversity, and the link between mountains and oceans.

Mountains are often referred to as the world's water towers. Approximately 70 percent of the world's freshwater is in the form of snow or ice, and glacial melt is vital for drinking water, agriculture, biodiversity, industry, and hydroelectric power. More than 2 billion people depend on glaciers and snowmelt for freshwater, including for food security, livelihoods, and cultural needs.

Mountains are important because they are the source of many major rivers and provide water for more than half of the world's population, supplying drinking water, household use, agriculture, and industry. They are also rich ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, as well as energy resources and mineral wealth. While these sensitive ecosystems were once only of interest to mountaineers and nature lovers, people are now turning to them for leisure activities.

Mountains are also rich ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, as well as energy resources and mineral wealth. While these sensitive ecosystems were once only of interest to mountaineers and nature lovers, people are now turning to them for leisure activities. Unconscious and insensitive human behaviour patterns, which cause the degradation of many ecosystems in nature, and the pressures created by ecotourism, threaten these environments as well.
